Answers to common questions about trying, buying and using Hangar. If you can't find what you need, see Getting help.

Getting started

What do I need to run Hangar?

A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later.

Does Hangar run on Intel Macs?

No. Hangar is built for Apple silicon only.

How do I install it?

Download Hangar from the download page, open the downloaded file, and move Hangar into your Applications folder. Hangar is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarised by Apple.

The trial

How does the trial work?

Every download starts with a free 14-day trial of Hangar Pro. It starts the first time you open Hangar and belongs to that Mac. There is nothing to fill in, no card and no account.

What if my Mac is offline the first time I open Hangar?

The trial still starts. Hangar registers it the next time your Mac connects.

What happens when the trial ends?

Hangar becomes Hangar Free, permanently: a complete file manager for your Mac. You see one short note explaining what changed, and it doesn't come back. Your saved connections, sync profiles and rename presets stay listed and can be exported. Using them needs Pro. A copy that started during the trial always finishes.

Can I start the trial again?

No. Each Mac gets one trial. You can buy Hangar Pro at any time, or keep using Hangar Free.

Buying and activating

How do I buy Hangar Pro?

Choose Buy Hangar Pro on the pricing page, or Buy in Hangar. Hangar Pro costs US$29 once, with 12 months of updates included. Prices are in US dollars, and tax is added at checkout where it applies.

Who handles the payment?

Paddle.com, our reseller and the Merchant of Record for every order. Paddle takes the payment, works out the tax, and sends your receipt and invoice. Your card details go to Paddle, never to us.

How do I get my key?

We email it to the address you used at checkout, usually within a minute. Check your spam folder if it hasn't arrived. Paddle sends your receipt in a separate email.

Keep the email with your key. We don't store keys, so we can't show yours again.

How do I activate Hangar Pro?

Either:

  • open the email on the Mac where Hangar is installed and choose Activate in Hangar. It opens Hangar and fills in your key; or
  • copy the key from the email and paste it into Hangar.

Activation needs an internet connection.

What does a key look like?

It starts with HGR, followed by five groups of letters and numbers, for example HGR-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXXX. Hyphens and spaces don't matter when you paste it.

Your Macs

How many Macs can I use?

One licence is for one person on up to 2 Macs. If your licence covers a different number, your licence shows it.

I'm moving to a new Mac. What do I do?

Deactivate Hangar on the old Mac first, in Hangar on that Mac. Then activate on the new Mac with your key. If you no longer have the old Mac, deactivate it from your Alienworld account instead.

A new Mac set up with Migration Assistant or from a backup counts as a new Mac, so it needs activating too.

My licence says all its Macs are in use.

Free a place by deactivating a Mac you no longer use, either in Hangar on that Mac or from your Alienworld account. Then activate again.

Is there a limit on deactivating Macs?

From your Alienworld account, you can deactivate up to 10 Macs per licence in 30 days. If you still have the Mac, you can deactivate it in Hangar on that Mac instead. If you need a place sooner, contact support.

What happens to a Mac I deactivate?

It becomes Hangar Free the next time it connects. Its files and settings stay as they are, and you can activate it again later.

What if I stop using a Mac without deactivating it?

A Mac that hasn't checked in for 90 days frees its place by itself when you activate another Mac.

Offline use

Does Hangar need a connection?

Hangar Free never needs one. Hangar Pro checks your licence about once every 7 days when your Mac is online, quietly in the background. It sends a hashed identifier for your Mac and nothing about your files.

How long can Hangar Pro work offline?

Up to 60 days. After that, Pro pauses and Hangar works as Hangar Free until your Mac connects again. Pro then comes back on its own. A network problem on its own never turns Pro off.

Updates and renewal

How do updates work?

By default, Hangar checks for updates once a day, and you can check any time with Hangar › Check for Updates…. Every update is signed, and Hangar checks the signature before it installs anything. It never installs while copies are running. Hangar Free gets every update too.

What happens after my 12 months of updates?

Nothing stops working, and your licence never expires. You keep every version released during your 12 months, with all of Hangar Pro, for good.

How do I get newer versions after that?

Renew for US$15 to get another 12 months of updates. Renewal is a one-time purchase, optional and never automatic. You can renew from Hangar or from your Alienworld account.

What if I install a version released after my updates end?

It runs as Hangar Free until you renew. Hangar tells you before you install such an update, so you can choose Not Now and keep the version you have.

Refunds

Can I get a refund?

Yes. You get a full refund within 14 days of purchase, no questions asked. Ask through the link in Paddle's receipt email, at paddle.net, or by emailing info@alienworld.asia. Paddle processes it. See the Refund Policy.

What happens after a refund?

A refunded licence stops working as Pro the next time Hangar checks in, and Hangar Free carries on. Your files are never affected. If you refund a renewal, only that renewal's months of updates are taken back.

Your Alienworld account

Do I need an account?

Not to download Hangar, use Hangar Free or start the trial. Your Alienworld account is created when you buy, using the email you paid with. The purchase email has a link that signs you in.

What can I do in my account?

See your licences and their Macs, deactivate a Mac, send yourself a new key, renew updates, and manage your emails and sign-in methods. Your receipts and invoices are kept by Paddle.

How can I sign in?

With Apple, with Google, with your email and a password, or with a link and 6-digit code we email to you. The emailed link and code always work for a verified email, so you can unlink the other methods if you like.

I lost my key.

Sign in to your Alienworld account and send yourself a new key. It goes to your primary email. Your old key stops working straight away, but Macs already set up keep working. You only need the new key to set up another Mac.

I signed in with Apple and my licence isn't there.

If you chose Hide My Email, Apple gives us a private address that doesn't match the email you paid with. In your account, choose Add the email you bought with and enter the 6-digit code we send to it. Once it's verified, licences bought with that email appear in your account.

I bought with a different email.

Add that email to your account and verify it with the code we send. Licences bought with any verified email on your account appear there.

How do I close my account?

Email info@alienworld.asia. We'll ask you to confirm by email. Macs already activated keep working, but without the account we can't send you a new key, so keep your key emails.

Free and Pro

What's the difference?

Hangar Free is a complete file manager for the files on your Mac: both panes, every view, tabs, the command palette, batch rename, tags, archives and Quick Look. Undo, skip-and-continue and the error report are always free.

Hangar Pro is for your servers and the bigger jobs: SFTP, SMB and S3 connections, folder sync and compare, verify after copy, resumable copies, advanced rename, photo culling, workspaces, automation and the developer tools.

See the full comparison on the pricing page.

Privacy

What does Hangar send?

Hangar has no analytics and no tracking. When you activate a licence, it sends a hashed identifier for your Mac, the Mac's label, and the Hangar and macOS versions. When it starts a trial or checks your licence about once a week, it sends the hashed identifier and the Hangar version. It never sends anything about your files. Checking for updates sends no identifiers at all. The Privacy Notice has the details.

Getting help

How do I contact support?

Email info@alienworld.asia. Please tell us your Hangar version, your macOS version and what happened. Don't send your full key unless we ask for it. The last four characters are enough for us to find your licence. See Support.
